The sweet spot
Nine weeks ago, I started a new creative adventure: exploring how to turn a photograph into an etching. Time for an update on where things stand now.

It’s been nearly thirty years since I last did any etching. I’ve taken it up again, and it feels fantastic! It took some effort, but my own printmaking studio is now truly up and running. Have a look!
Het is wel dertig jaar geleden dat ik voor het laatst etste. Ik heb het nu weer opgepakt en het voelt fantastisch! Het kostte wat moeite, maar mijn eigen grafische atelier is nu echt up & running. Kijk zelf maar.

Two weeks ago, the National Knowledge Network Psychiatry & Giftedness launched their new website, which I had the pleasure of designing. They were not only happy with the result, but also interviewed me about it.
Twee weken geleden lanceerde de Stichting Landelijk Kennisnetwerk Psychiatrie en Hoogbegaafdheid hun nieuwe website, die ik met veel plezier heb mogen ontwerpen. Ze waren niet alleen blij met het resultaat, maar hebben mij er ook over geïnterviewd.
Erwin Olaf
It’s always interesting to get a glimpse into the creative process of a great artist—what the initial concept was, where he or she struggled, and what ultimately drove the work. In that sense, Erwin Olaf’s retrospective turned out to be far more inspiring than I had anticipated.
Het is altijd interessant om een inkijkje te krijgen in het creatieve proces van een groot kunstenaar — wat het oorspronkelijke concept was, waar hij of zij mee worstelde en wat het werk uiteindelijk heeft gedreven. In die zin bleek de overzichtstentoonstelling van Erwin Olaf veel inspirerender dan ik had verwacht.

7 Challenging assignments
As you might remember, a few months ago I gave a photography masterclass at Wall House #2 of the Groninger Museum. One of the participants enjoyed it so much that she asked me to coach her. She did catch her breath a little at the challenge of the very first assignment I gave her: create a self-portrait! As daunting as that task may be, here are seven photography assignments I’ve recently struggled with myself.
Zoals je je misschien herinnert, gaf ik een paar maanden geleden een fotografiemasterclass in Wall House #2 van het Groninger Museum. Een van de deelnemers vond het zó leuk dat ze me vroeg haar te coachen. Ze moest wel even slikken bij de uitdaging van de allereerste opdracht die ik haar gaf: maak een zelfportret! Hoe uitdagend die opdracht ook is, hier zijn zeven fotografie-opdrachten waar ik zelf recent mee geworsteld heb.
Pierced camera
No, fortunately there’s nothing wrong with my camera. But the camera of this photographer was in much worse shape.
Nee hoor, met mijn camera is er gelukkig niks aan de hand. Maar de camera van deze fotograaf was er slechter aan toe.
Improv theatre
For seventeen years, I performed on stage doing improv theatre. Eleven years ago, I left that behind when I started my photography business. Last Friday, I sat in the audience watching my old group. I remembered how it felt to be up there, fully in the moment. If only days had a few more hours…
Zeventien jaar lang stond ik op het podium met improvisatietheater. Elf jaar geleden liet ik dat achter me, toen ik mijn fotografiebedrijf begon. Afgelopen vrijdag zat ik in de zaal bij mijn oude groep — en even voelde ik weer hoe het was om daar te staan, in het moment. Als dagen toch eens wat meer uren hadden…
