A commission with impact
Damage to your home is deeply unpleasant.
But what strikes me as truly exhausting is going through it over and over again. The legal battle, again and again, to get all the damage seen, acknowledged, and repaired — always, of course, right at the moment when everything has just been fixed.
Although gas extraction in Groningen has been halted for two years now, earthquakes are still occurring. "It was really a huge jolt that lasted five or six seconds," says a resident of Middelstum on the NOS news, about three weeks ago.
How is that possible? Decades of gas extraction have created pressure differences within the gas field, and those differences are now gradually equalizing — a process that can take decades more and that can put stress on fault lines underground, resulting in earthquakes.
Last month I drove through the vast gas extraction area in both Groningen and Drenthe. Commissioned by Gronings Perspectief, I photographed the demolished neighborhoods in Appingedam, documented the reinforcement work in the Rensumaheerd district in Beijum (a neighborhood in the city of Groningen), visited the temporary replacement housing near Garrelsweer, Loppersum, and Garsthuizen, captured the gas storage facility in Norg, as well as the many repair and reinforcement works in Norg, Overschild, Vries, Tynaarlo, Leek, and Roden.
Gronings Perspectief is the long-running scientific research program run by the University of Groningen, which has been mapping the psychosocial effects of gas extraction since 2016. In collaboration with design studio DorelXBold, a new website is being developed. For this website, the research reports, and other publications, I was given the opportunity to create new imagery.
As familiar as I am with the university and the city of Groningen, this entirely different side of the northern provinces was new and striking to me. You get a different perspective on the matter altogether when you see it with your own eyes in person, rather than having it briefly touched upon on the NOS news.
Een opdracht met impact
Schade aan je huis is heel vervelend.
Maar wat me vooral slopend lijkt is om het herhaaldelijk mee te maken. Steeds opnieuw het juridische gevecht om alle schade gezien, erkend en hersteld te krijgen, natuurlijk steeds op het moment wanneer alles net hersteld is.
Hoewel de gaswinning in Groningen al twee jaar stilligt, komen er nog steeds aardbevingen voor. “Het was echt een enorme klap die vijf of zes seconden aanhield”, zegt een inwoner van Middelstum op het NOS journal, zo’n drie weken geleden.
Hoe kan dat? Door de jarenlange gaswinning zijn er drukverschillen ontstaan in het gasveld, en die drukverschillen vereffenen zich nu geleidelijk — een proces dat nog tientallen jaren kan duren en dat spanningen op breuken in de ondergrond kan veroorzaken, met bevingen tot gevolg.
Vorige maand reed ik door het uitgestrekte gaswinningsgebied in zowel Groningen als Drenthe. In opdracht van Gronings Perspectief heb ik de gesloopte stadswijken in Appingedam gefotografeerd, de versterkingswerkzaamheden in de Rensumaheerd in Beijum (een stadwijk in Groningen) gedocumenteerd, de wisselwoningen bezocht bij Garrelsweer, Loppersum, en Garsthuizen, de gasopslag in Norg vastgelegd evenals de vele herstel- en versterkingswerkzaamheden in Norg, Overschild, Vries, Tynaarlo, Leek, en Roden.
Gronings Perspectief is het langlopende wetenschappelijke onderzoeksprogramma van de RUG dat sinds 2016 de psychosociale gevolgen van de gaswinning in kaart brengt. In samenwerking met ontwerpstudio DorelXBold wordt er gewerkt aan een nieuwe website. Voor deze website, de onderzoeksrapporten en andere publicaties mocht ik nieuw beeldmateriaal maken.
Zo vertrouwd als ik ben met de RUG en de stad Groningen, zo nieuw en indrukwekkend was deze totaal andere kant van de Noordelijke provincies voor me. Je krijgt toch even een ander perspectief op de zaak als je het met je eigen ogen in het echt aanschouwt in plaats van vanaf de bank, als het weer eens kort wordt aangestipt op het NOS journaal.
