The museum that keeps bringing me back to my childhood

Fat snowflakes drifting down from the sky.

I remember the euphoric feeling, the soft, wet touch on your face, and the wonder that such a thing exists.

I get that same feeling every time I visit Museum Voorlinden. If you love art — and you do, otherwise you wouldn't be reading this — then you have to go. And now more than ever. The museum is celebrating its tenth anniversary in style with the exhibition Celebrating the Icons of Art. Honestly, I was surprised the museum has only been around for ten years; I've already visited it so many times.

What an overwhelming wealth of art treasures there is to see now. And what specifically brought me back to my childhood this time? Take the intriguing mobile by Alexander Calder, the touching giant sculpture by Ron Mueck, the overwhelming steel sculpture by Richard Serra, the magical swimming pool by Leandro Erlich, or the balloon room by Martin Creed that feels like it's been filled with laughing gas. And last but not least: one of my all-time favorite paintings, Bleu II by Joan Miró. I don't know what it is about that painting, but I can never look away.

Like after a snowball fight, I walked back outside yesterday, exhausted by it all. Happy as a child, the hefty Anna Atkins Cyanotypes book from the museum shop tucked under my arm. It should be clear by now: this is once again an exhibition firmly in must-see territory.

On view through March 7, 2027.

En last but not least: één van mijn favoriete schilderijen ever: Bleu II van Joan Miró.
