A fine line
Spread across two rooms, sixteen portraits I made on commission for care organisation Sûnenz will be on show at Museum Opsterlân in two weeks' time. Each participant was also interviewed by journalist Arend Waninge on what they had been a 'master' at during their life – or perhaps still are. And maybe the most important question: how do they now, as they've grown older and life has changed, still give meaning to it?
The assignment for the art project Bisto Grutsk? was to create the portraits in the style of the old masters, complete with characteristic collars. Quite a challenge, because the line between art and kitsch is razor-thin.
What's the difference?
Kitsch smooths away complexity. The old-master style represents dignity; the collars represent nostalgia. Add some Rembrandt lighting and you're done.
Art, on the other hand, creates space for complexity. Not so much by creating a complex image with all sorts of bells and whistles, but by leaving room for ambiguity and layering. The personal objects the subjects hold hopefully spark curiosity about the stories that emerge in the interviews. I wanted to show not only pride in the portraits, but also a degree of vulnerability and resilience, with a touch of humor where possible.

Een dunne lijn
Verdeeld over twee zalen zijn vandaag over twee weken 16 portretten in Museum Opsterlân te zien die ik in opdracht van zorginstelling Sûnenz heb mogen maken. Iedere deelnemer werd tevens door journalist Arend Waninge gevraagd waar ze tijdens hun leven een ‘meester’ in waren - of misschien nog steeds zijn. En misschien wel de belangrijkste vraag: hoe geven ze daar nu, nu ze ouder zijn en het leven is veranderd, nog betekenis aan? De opdracht voor het kunstproject Bisto Grutsk? was verder om de portretten in de stijl van de oude meesters te maken, compleet met karakteristieke kraagjes.
Best nogal een uitdaging, want de grens tussen kunst en kitsch is flinterdun.
Waarin zit het verschil?
Kitsch poetst de complexiteit weg. De oude-meester stijl staat voor waardigheid; de kraagjes voor nostalgie. Wat Rembrandt-belichting en klaar.
Kunst daarentegen geeft juist ruimte aan complexiteit. Niet zo zeer door een complex beeld te creëren met allerlei toeters en bellen, maar door ruimte te houden voor ambiguïteit en gelaagdheid. De persoonlijke objecten die de geportretteerden laten zien maken hopelijk nieuwsgierig naar de verhalen die in de interviews naar voren komen. Niet alleen wilde ik in de portretten trotsheid laten zien, maar tevens een bepaalde mate van kwetsbaarheid én veerkracht, met waar mogelijk een vleugje humor.
Oordeel zelf of dat al dan niet gelukt is. Je bent van harte welkom bij de opening van de tentoonstelling op 9 april en de expositie is t/m 28 juni in het museum te Gorredijk te zien.
