Contretemps
Een ziekenhuisopname betekent vaak tegenslag: een plotselinge verstoring van het gewone ritme, soms zelfs een botsing met de tijd. Contretemps is een begrip waarin deze betekenissen samenkomen.
Het gelijknamige fotografencollectief markeert haar twintigjarig bestaan met persoonlijke interpretaties van het begrip Contretemps.
In verschillende verschijningsvormen zien we de teruggetrokken mens, in zowel tijd als ruimte. Tegelijk laten deze beelden zien dat juist in momenten van stilstand ruimte ontstaat voor nieuwe inzichten en onverwachte veerkracht.
Contretemps
A hospital admission often means a setback: a sudden disruption of the ordinary rhythm, sometimes even a collision with time itself. Contretemps is a term in which these meanings converge.
The photographic collective of the same name marks its twentieth anniversary with personal interpretations of the concept of Contretemps.
Across various manifestations, we encounter the withdrawn human figure, both in time and in space. At the same time, these images reveal that it is precisely in moments of stillness that space emerges for new insights and unexpected resilience.

Sander Martens is fotograaf, kunstenaar, webdesigner en initiator van het Contretemps collectief. Gedurende een carrière van bijna 30 jaar, waarvan 20 jaar in het UMCG, deed hij cognitief neurowetenschappelijk onderzoek naar aandacht. Tegenwoordig vangt hij aandacht met zijn grafische beelden, waarin controle, verandering en chaos terugkerende thema's zijn.
Contretemps: Moments that never synced onderzoekt de tussenruimtes tussen verbinding en isolement. Die kwetsbare momenten waarop mensen om elkaar heen cirkelen maar elkaar niet weten te vinden – niet door een gebrek aan verlangen, maar door subtiele verschuivingen in timing, perceptie en emotioneel ritme.
Niels Taatgen is onderzoeker en docent aan de RUG, waar hij probeert de raadsels van menselijke en kunstmatige intelligentie te ontrafelen. Zowel zijn vader als grootvaders waren geobsedeerd door fotografie, dus stond hij al als tienjarige in de doka. Hij is sinds 2017 aangesloten bij het collectief.
Contretemps: Tijdverschuiving
Soms beweegt de wereld sneller dan jezelf. Dan is alles leeg, en verdwijnt alles in grijsheid of mist.
De wereld lijkt zonder tijd, zonder doel, zonder actie.
Totdat de tijd je terugvindt.
Roelie van der Voort is sinds 2015 lid van het Contretemps collectief.
Vanuit intuïtie zoekt zij naar beelden die zich niet direct laten duiden. Waarin gelaagdheid en mysterie een sfeer oproepen en de verbeelding ruimte krijgt.

In het huis dat niet meer voldoet
dat zijn bewoner kwijt is
waarvoor geen zorg gedragen wordt
kiert het licht naar binnen
Vocht hoopt zich samen

Robert Jan Wijdh is als oogarts werkzaam in het UMCG en sinds 2015 lid van het Contretemps collectief. Oogheelkunde is een zeer visueel vak dus de combinatie met fotografie ligt voor de hand. De camera is daarbij niet alleen een instrument om foto’s mee te maken maar ook een middel om in contact te komen met onbekende mensen die hem fascineren.
Contretemps: Out of my sync
Het is niet makkelijk om te ontsnappen aan de normen van onze conformistische samenleving maar sommige mensen hebben de wil en de moed om anders te zijn en volgens hun eigen normen en regels te leven. Out of my Sync is een serie portretten van mensen die mij inspireren en fascineren omdat ze lekker hun eigen gang gaan en zich niets aantrekken van wat anderen daarvan vinden.
De analoge portretten zijn allemaal in het Noorderplantsoen gemaakt vanwege de band die de geportretteerden en ikzelf met dit prachtige park in Groningen hebben.
Max Witjes is als kaakchirurg/hoofd-halsoncoloog werkzaam in het UMCG. In zijn dagelijkse werk én in zijn fotografie spelen ambacht, kwetsbaarheid en menselijke nabijheid een belangrijke rol. Hij fotografeert vaak analoog en ontwikkelt en drukt zijn beelden zelf af. De aandacht die dit vraagt, sluit aan bij zijn manier van kijken en werken. Max maakt sinds 2022 deel uit van het collectief.
Contretemps: Buiten de tijd
Soms verliest tijd zijn richting. Wat overblijft is een voortdurende aanwezigheid. Een contretemps, een hapering waarin beweging vertraagt en aandacht scherper wordt.
In die tijdelijke stilstand vervagen verwachtingen en verplichtingen. Het hier en nu krijgt gewicht. Losgemaakt van haar dwingende verloop, ontstaat ruimte.
Ruimte voor het moment.

Sander Martens is a photographer, visual artist, web designer, and initiator of the Contretemps collective. Over the course of a nearly 30-year career, including 20 years at UMCG, he conducted cognitive neuroscientific research on attention. Today, he captures attention through his graphic imagery, in which control, change, and chaos are recurring themes.
Contretemps: Moments that never synced explores the liminal spaces between connection and isolation. Those fragile instances when people orbit each other but fail to converge – not through absence of desire, but through subtle misalignments of timing, perception, and emotional rhythm.
Niels Taatgen is researcher and teacher at the UG, where he pursues the mysteries of human and artificial intelligence. Both his grandfathers and father were obsessed with photography, so as ten-year-old he already assisted them in the darkroom. He is part of the Contrempts collective since 2017.
Contretemps: Time shift
Sometimes the world moves faster than you do. In those moments, everything feels empty, dissolving into greyness or fog.
The world seems without time, without purpose, without action.
Until time catches up with you.
Roelie van der Voort has been a member of the Contretemps collective since 2015.
Guided by intuition, she seeks images that do not immediately reveal themselves. Images in which layering and mystery evoke a certain atmosphere, leaving space for imagination.

Robert Jan Wijdh works as an ophthalmologist at UMCG and has been a member of the Contretemps collective since 2015. Ophthalmology is a highly visual field, making its connection with photography a natural one. For him, the camera is not only a tool for making photographs, but also a means of connecting with strangers who fascinate him.
Contretemps: Out of My Sync
Escaping the norms of our conformist society is not easy, yet some people possess the will and courage to live differently, according to their own values and rules. Out of My Sync is a series of portraits of people who inspire and fascinate me because they confidently follow their own path, unconcerned with what others may think.
All of the analogue portraits were made in the Noorderplantsoen, reflecting the bond that both the subjects and I share with this beautiful park in Groningen.
Max Witjes works as an oral and maxillofacial surgeon/head and neck oncologist at UMCG. In both his daily work and his photography, craftsmanship, vulnerability and human connection play an important role. He often works with analogue photography, shooting on film and developing and printing his images himself. The attention this process requires aligns with his way of seeing and working. He joined the collective in 2022.
Contretemps: beyond time
At times, time loses its direction. What remains is an ongoing presence. A contretemps — a pause where movement slows and awareness becomes keener.
In this momentary stillness, expectations and obligations dissolve. The present gains gravity.
Released from its relentless flow, space opens up.
Space for the moment.
