Exciting? Yes.
Uncomfortable? A little too.
But proud — that’s what I undoubtedly felt today.
That exact mix of emotions is what I tried to capture in the sixteen portraits that were officially unveiled today by the alderman during the opening of my 5th museum exhibition. Together with the interviews by journalist Arend Waninge, they tell a story about the art of growing older, staying resilient, and being proud — even when that doesn't come easily.
As Arend writes: "It may well be one of the most beautiful Frisian words: Grutsk. Even if you don't know its meaning, you quickly make the connection with pride. Feeling proud is one thing, showing it is another. Especially in the down-to-earth region of Fryslân, where at birth the rusk is often sprinkled with a combination of sugar-coated anise and modesty."
That’s exactly what this exhibition speaks to. On view until June 27 at Museum Opsterlân — and then travelling across Friesland for another year.

Spannend? Ja.
Ongemakkelijk? Ook een beetje.
Maar trots — dat was ik vandaag zonder twijfel.
Precies die mix van emoties heb ik in de zestien portretten proberen te vangen die vandaag officieel door de wethouder onthuld werden tijdens de opening van mijn 5e museum expositie. Samen met de interviews van journalist Arend Waninge vertellen ze een verhaal over de kunst van het ouder worden, veerkrachtig blijven, en trots zijn — ook als je dat niet zo makkelijk laat zien.
Zoals Arend schrijft: "Het is misschien wel een van de mooiste Friese woorden: Grutsk. Zelfs als je de betekenis niet kent, leg je al snel de verbinding met trots. Trots voelen is één, trots uitstralen is een tweede. Zeker in het nuchtere Fryslân, waar bij de geboorte het beschuitje vaak bestrooid is met een combinatie van muisjes en bescheidenheid."
Daar sluit deze tentoonstelling precies op aan. Te zien tot en met 27 juni in Museum Opsterlân — en daarna nog een jaar lang op verschillende plekken in Friesland.
