Is that Frisian?
Yes. It means: “Are you proud?”
So, are you a proud Frisian?
Ha ha, no. But I do have Frisian in-laws. And we live in Friesland — that too.
But surely you are proud. Name three things.
Uh, okay. My family. My scientific career. And my decision to put an end to that career and throw myself into this artistic adventure.
I see. But what does “Bist do grutsk?” actually refer to?
It’s the title of the art project for which I was commissioned by the care organisation Sunenz. With assistance from Dorens van der Werf, who helped with the styling, I was able to create sixteen portraits in and around the organisation over the course of two days, at De Miente in Gorredijk. The assignment was to portray them in the style of the old masters. I tried to strike a balance between pride, dignity, and a touch of humour.
Journalist Arend Waninge will soon be interviewing the people portrayed. With questions about what they are proud of. What they were — or perhaps still are — a “master” of. And maybe the most important question of all: how do they continue to give meaning to that now, now that they are older and life has changed?

Ja. Het betekent: “Ben je trots?”
En, ben je een trotse Fries?
Ha ha, nee. Maar ik heb wel een Friese schoonfamilie. En we wonen in Friesland — dat ook.
Maar je bent vast wél trots. Noem eens drie dingen.
Uh, oké. Mijn gezin. Mijn wetenschappelijke carrière. En mijn beslissing om een punt achter die carrière te zetten en me in dit artistieke avontuur te storten.
Snap ik. Maar wat heeft dat “Bist do grutsk?” nou te betekenen?
Het is de titel van het kunstproject waarvoor zorgorganisatie Sunenz mij inschakelde. Met assistentie van Dorens van der Werf, die hielp met de styling, heb ik in twee dagen tijd in De Miente in Gorredijk zestien portretten mogen maken van mensen in en rond de organisatie. De opdracht was om hen te portretteren in de stijl van de oude meesters. Ik heb geprobeerd een balans te vinden tussen trots, waardigheid, en ook een vleugje humor.
Journalist Arend Waninge zal de geportretteerden binnenkort interviewen. Met vragen over waar ze trots op zijn. Waar ze een ‘meester’ in waren — of misschien nog steeds zijn. En misschien wel de belangrijkste vraag: hoe geven ze daar nu, nu ze ouder zijn en het leven is veranderd, nog betekenis aan?
Mooi project. Waar en wanneer zijn tekst en beeld te zien?
