Above & beyond

  • Ik dacht altijd dat de sky the limit was, maar het bleek dat er harde grenzen zijn aan wat je kunt doen. “Above & beyond” visualiseert de verschillende stadia om dit te accepteren.

“…These botanical images extend far beyond “what a thing looks like” and transform into compositions which feel both otherworldly and *inner*worldly (of the mind). You’ve put together a strong sequence of images. Most photographers try to fill their allotted 10 images to capacity and you’ve made a wise decision to keep this tight and concise. The alternation between light and dark backgrounds is another way that subconsciously holds the viewer’s interest. These are details that have made noticeable impact.

What also stands out here is the repetition of an erratic line which is where the work really seems to lean into something somewhat psychological. “Undulation” and “Poise” share a similar crevice-like line running down the middle of the composition. And the three repeated lines in “The Score” are perfectly imperfect (with these speaking to an earlier composition with seeds lined up atop a painted square).

Your photography work and background in experimental psychology remind me of an art class led by a psychologist where different methods were used to express one’s internal state...”draw a nervous line”...”cover your canvas with black and then sketch with white”... I see those elements within your work here and in the more straightforward image of a flower underwater, it reads to this particular viewer as one submerged within the subconscious.

Overall, you have an effective and poetic series of work. Stellar job.”
