From the series “The point being…”
I'm still changing and polishing the website considerably. One of the things I am still struggling with is the translation. Many people ask me why I don't keep everything in Dutch. Well… When I started my company ten years ago I already had sky-high international ambitions! Which is why, until recently, I did everything in English.
Today that ambition has all but diminished...! In fact, one of my goals is to further expand the commercial part of my photography, for which local accessibility is of course an important key. I get a long way with automatic translation from English to Dutch, but for some texts, unfortunately, the translation still falls quite short. It works, but it often feels somewhat awkward...
In the series section, for instance, the nuance is often lost. I tried several things, but the solution I’m looking at right now is the following. In those cases where the automatic translation is not entirely optimal, I will ensure that on that specific page there is always a link to a proper Dutch translation, often marked with > NL.

>NL Ik ben nog steeds flink aan de website aan het schuren en schaven. Een van de dingen waar ik o.a. nog mee worstel is de vertaling. Veel mensen vragen me waarom ik niet alles in het Nederlands houd. Toen ik tien jaar geleden met mijn bedrijf begon had ik echter meteen al torenhoge internationale ambities! Daarom deed ik tot voor kort alles in het Engels.
Vandaag de dag is die ambitie alles behalve minder geworden…! Nu is het bovendien zo dat ik de commerciële tak van mijn fotografie verder wil uitbreiden waarbij lokale toegankelijkheid natuurlijk een belangrijke sleutel is. Met automatische vertaling van het Engels naar het Nederlands kom ik een heel eind, maar bij een aantal teksten schiet die vertaling helaas toch nog behoorlijk tekort. Het werkt wel, maar het stroeft… Bij mijn series gaat de nuance bijvoorbeeld vaak verloren, terwijl juist daar de tekst over het concept en de thematiek zo belangrijk is.
Inmiddels heb ik verschillende dingen geprobeerd en op dit moment heb ik de volgende oplossing voor ogen. In die gevallen waarbij de automatische vertaling niet helemaal optimaal is ga ik ervoor zorgen dat op die specifieke pagina er altijd een link naar een eigenhandige Nederlandse vertaling is, vaak aangeduid met > NL.
Heb ik wat te doen in de voorjaarsvakantie ;-)… To be continued, work in progress…!
