Run Lola Run
“We shall not cease from exploration
And the end of all our exploring
Will be to arrive where we started
And know the place for the first time.”
This poem opens the German film Lola Rennt (Run Lola Run in English) from 1998, directed by Tom Tykwer, starring Franka Potente in the lead role as Lola. Lola has twenty minutes to save her lover from the wrath of his boss, after he lost 100,000 German Marks. The film plays out this scenario three times, each time with small variations at the start that lead to completely different outcomes.
Along the way, Lola passes people whose entire life story is sketched in a few seconds, sometimes funny, sometimes tragic. It was especially these fleeting moments, each carrying a different life story, that I found utterly fascinating. That chaos-theory-like concept connects well with my Order and chaos as a function of time theme. This film became an important source of inspiration for my "What were you thinking?" project.

Met dit gedicht begint de Duitse film Lola Rennt (in het Engels Run Lola Run)uit 1998, geregisseerd door Tom Tykwer, met Franka Potente in de hoofdrol als Lola. Lola krijgt twintig minuten de tijd om haar minnaar te redden van de woede van zijn baas nadat hij 100.000 Duitse Mark heeft verloren. De film speelt dit scenario drie keer af, telkens met kleine variaties in het begin die tot compleet verschillende uitkomsten leiden.
Onderweg passeert Lola in een paar seconden tijd mensen wiens hele levensloop in een flits wordt geschetst, soms grappig, soms tragisch. Vooral die vluchtige momenten met steeds een ander levensverhaal vond ik uitermate fascinerend. Dat chaos-theorie-achtige concept sluit goed aan bij mijn Orde en chaos als een functie van tijd thema. Deze film vormde dan ook een belangrijke inspiratiebron voor mijn “What were you thinking?”-project.
