Poor things
Forum Groningen, July 7th 2025
“There’s no place quite as cosy as Surhuisterveen.”
“Nothing tops Groningen.”
“Düsseldorf, as colorful as the world.”
“Leiden, city of discoveries.”
“Cambridge, city of innovation.”
“Always Nijmegen.”
“Tilburg, you’ve arrived.”
Who comes up with these kinds of slogans anyway?
Probably some guy or gal who once lived there. Poor thing.
As did I, actually (or in the case of the first place: still do).
But that was anything but sad.
In fact, over the past few decades, I’ve enjoyed living in every one of those places.
Well… OK, maybe Düsseldorf was the exception.
This past Monday, by the way, I was watching Poor Things.
Fantastic film — highly recommended, both in content and design.
Speaking of design…
That poster you see up there, on that giant screen in Forum Groningen?
I made that — and I loved working on it.
Still proud of it, too.
Or, as they’d say here in cosy little Surhuisterveen: “Hiel grutsk!”
“Surhuisterveen zo gezellig is er geen één.”
“Er gaat niets boven Groningen.”
“Düsseldorf, so bunt wie die Welt.”
“Leiden, stad van ontdekkingen.”
“Cambridge, city of innovation.”
“Altijd Nijmegen.”
“Tilburg, je bent er.”
Wie verzínt toch dat soort slogans?
Vermoedelijk toch een meneer of mevrouw die er gewoond heeft. Poor thing.
Net als ik overigens deed (of in het geval van de eerstgenoemde plek: doe).
Dat was zeker niet zielig.
Sterker nog - op alle genoemde plekken heb ik de afgelopen decennia met veel plezier gewoond.
Ja, OK, met uitzondering van Düsseldorf dan.
Afgelopen maandag zat ik trouwens naar ‘Poor things’ te kijken.
Fantastische film, een aanrader. Zowel inhoudelijk als qua vormgeving.
Over vormgeving gesproken…
Die poster die je daar op dat loeigrote scherm ziet, in Forum Groningen, die heb ik gemaakt. Ook met heel veel plezier. Ik ben er nog steeds trots op. Of zoals ze hier in het gezellige Surhuisterveen zouden zeggen: “Hiel grutsk!”
