This week, my wife and I spent two days in the stately city of Haarlem to visit the oldest museum in the Netherlands for the first time: the Teylers Museum. We couldn’t have timed it better — the Michelangelo exhibition had just opened while we were there. For the first time in Dutch history, an original sculpture by Michelangelo is on display in the Netherlands. Truly special and fascinating to witness his (dangerous) obsession with his subject, something we’ve also seen earlier this month in the work of Stephan Vanfleteren. Just as Vanfleteren devoted himself body and soul to the sea, Michelangelo did so 500 years ago to the male body. The Teylers Museum is definitely worth a visit — there’s so much more beauty to see, the building itself included. The exhibition The Men of Michelangelo runs until January 15, 2026.
Deze week ben ik met mijn lief twee dagen in het statige Haarlem geweest om voor het eerst het oudste museum van Nederland te bezoeken: Het Teylers museum. We vielen met onze neus in de boter: de tentoonstelling over Michelangelo opende net toen wij er waren. Voor het eerst in de Nederlandse geschiedenis bevindt zich een origineel beeldhouwwerk van Michelangelo in Nederland. Heel bijzonder en prachtig om de (gevaarlijke) obsessie met zijn onderwerp te zien die we eerder deze maand ook bij Stephan Vanfleteren zagen. Zoals Vanfleteren zijn aandacht met ziel en zaligheid op de zee stortte, zo deed Michelangelo dat 500 jaar geleden met het mannelijke lichaam. Sowieso een aanrader, het Teylers museum, want er is nog veel meer moois te zien. Alleen het gebouw zelf al. De expositie De mannen van Michelangelo is t/m 15 januari 2026 te zien.
