I myself worked as a cognitive neuroscientist for nearly 30 years and have witnessed many defences — as co-supervisor, opponent, and photographer.
Where I once used neuroimaging techniques to study attention, I now capture it through my graphic images, in which light and chance moments play a central role.
Since 2014 I have been working as a professional portrait photographer. Part-time at first, but I enjoyed it so much that in 2024 I made the switch to being a full-time photographer, visual artist and web designer.
A big and exciting step — and I love it.

A PhD defence follows a tight schedule: the preparation (45 min), the ceremony (45 min), and the reception (60 min). To capture it properly, you need around 175–200 photos. No more, no less. Let’s not make things more complicated than they need to be!
