Zonder tussenkomst van een algoritme groeit het aantal lezers van deze nieuwsbrief elke maand. En daarmee de creatieve community die ik ermee probeer op te bouwen. Fijn dat jij erbij bent!

De nieuwsbrief voelt als een persoonlijk maar ook wat merkwaardig gesprek: ik schrijf voor mensen die ik inmiddels lang niet allemaal persoonlijk ken. Vandaar de feedbackknoppen onderaan de nieuwsbrief, en vandaar ook het “What were you thinking?”-project dat ik vorige maand introduceerde — een uitnodiging om niet langer alleen te ontvangen, maar zelf ook iets in te brengen. Als je dat leuk vindt.

Door de controle deels uit handen te geven hoop ik dat er iets moois en verrassends kan ontstaan. Vasthouden en loslaten. Een balans vinden tussen orde en chaos. Het is niet toevallig dat mijn fotografie en mijn eerdere onderzoek naar selectieve aandacht elkaar daar raken.

Amber Boomsma interviewde me er laatst uitgebreid over voor haar blog over dagelijkse moed. Chaos is onvoorspelbaar en het gebrek aan controle kan ongemakkelijk en zelfs beangstigend voelen. Maar zonder ruimte voor chaos verdwijnen ook spontaniteit en ontdekking.

Vanuit die gedachte ontstond ook het project “What were you thinking?”. Ik zou zelf honderd gedachten kunnen bedenken die de geportretteerden mogelijk hadden. Maar veel interessanter is het om dat samen te doen. Om het begin van een serie te laten ontstaan, en hopelijk ook ter inspiratie, presenteer ik deze keer niet één, maar twee nieuwe beelden.

The newsletter feels like a personal but also somewhat peculiar conversation: I write for people I no longer always know personally. That’s why there are feedback buttons at the bottom of the newsletter, and also why I introduced the “What were you thinking?” project last month — an invitation not only to receive, but also to contribute something yourself. If you feel like it.

By giving up some control, I hope something beautiful and surprising can emerge. Holding on and letting go. Finding a balance between order and chaos. It is no coincidence that my photography and my earlier research into selective attention meet there.

Amber Boomsma recently interviewed me at length about it for her blog on daily courage. Chaos is unpredictable, and the lack of control can feel uncomfortable and even frightening. But without space for chaos, spontaneity and discovery also disappear.

From that idea, the “What were you thinking?” project emerged. I could, of course, come up with a hundred thoughts myself about what the portrayed people might have been thinking. But it is far more interesting to do that together. To let the beginning of a series take shape, and hopefully also as inspiration, I'm presenting not one but two new images this time.

STREET ART

Nu we het toch over straatfotografie hebben.

In december vorig jaar overleed Martin Parr, één van de meest invloedrijke én omstreden figuren binnen de documentaire- en straatfotografie van de afgelopen veertig jaar.

Waarom omstreden? Hij introduceerde kleur als serieus medium, terwijl dat in de kunstfotografie van de jaren tachtig nog nauwelijks werd geaccepteerd. Met een blik die tegelijk liefdevol en meedogenloos was, richtte hij zijn camera vooral op vakantiegangers, consumenten, sociale rituelen — mensen die eten, shoppen, poseren.

Daarmee droeg hij sterk bij aan een verschuiving binnen de documentaire fotografie. Uiteindelijk werd hij lid, en later zelfs voorzitter, van het gerenommeerde Magnum Photos, tot ongenoegen van Henri Cartier-Bresson.

In Foam bezocht ik de tentoonstelling van zijn indrukwekkende en vaak humoristische werk. Ook het verhaal van zijn vrouw over de enorme collectie fotoboeken die Parr obsessief verzamelde vond ik erg vermakelijk. 

In scherp contrast staan de beelden van World Press Photo, waar de werkelijkheid zich meestal van een veel hardere kant laat zien. Toch hebben de exposities iets gemeen: ze laten een ongemakkelijke werkelijkheid zien die nog lang blijft hangen. En die aanmoedigt beter te kijken, in plaats van weg te kijken.

Now that we’re on the subject of street photography.

Last December, Martin Parr passed away, one of the most influential — and at the same time controversial — figures in documentary and street photography of the past forty years.

Why controversial? He introduced colour as a serious medium at a time when it was still barely accepted within the art photography world of the 1980s. With a gaze that was both affectionate and merciless, he turned his camera mainly toward tourists, consumers, and social rituals — people eating, shopping, posing.

In doing so, he played a major role in shifting the language of documentary photography. Eventually, he became a member, and later even president, of the renowned Magnum Photos, much to the annoyance of Henri Cartier-Bresson.

At Foam, I visited the exhibition of his impressive and often humorous work. I also greatly enjoyed the story told by his wife about the enormous collection of photobooks Parr obsessively gathered over the years.

In sharp contrast stand the images of World Press Photo, where reality usually reveals a much harsher side of itself. Yet the exhibitions share something in common: they both present an uncomfortable reality that lingers long afterwards — and encourages us to look more carefully, instead of looking away.

One last thing…

In het kader van: keep your friends close and your enemies closer. Afgelopen week volgde ik een cursus AI voor fotografen, van Violina Jeliazkova. AI verdringt inmiddels banen in vrijwel alle sectoren. Zeker leerzaam om te onderzoeken in hoeverre deze existentiële bedreiging ingezet kan worden tot nuttig gereedschap. En na te denken over een antwoord: terug naar fysiek gemaakte kunst. In mijn geval: met mijn handen in de etsinkt. 

In the spirit of: keep your friends close and your enemies closer. Last week I took a course on AI for photographers, by Violina Jeliazkova. AI is now displacing jobs across virtually every sector. It's certainly worth exploring to what extent this existential threat can be turned into a useful tool. And to think about a response: a return to physically made art. In my case: with my hands in the etching ink.
