The shape of time

Zoals bovenstaand schaap. Zo reikhalzend kijk ik inmiddels uit naar de zomervakantie. Niet dat ik me verveel, alles behalve. Maar door die tropische temperaturen van de laatste tijd krijg je toch vanzelf zin in vakantie.

“Oh ja hoor, meneertje heeft een cursus AI voor fotografen gedaan.” zul je misschien denken. Op zich klopt dat, vorige maand schreef ik daar immers nog over. Maar nee, hier is noch AI, noch enige vorm van nabewerking voor gebruikt. Een snelle camera, een tripje naar Terschelling en een tweede schaap met een goed gevoel voor tijd en ruimte was alles wat ik nodig had. 

Mijn eigen gevoel voor tijd en ruimte heb ik deze maand ook wel wat kunnen aanscherpen. Bijvoorbeeld tijdens de Feanster 40, de triathlon die elk jaar voor mijn deur langs raast. Of de portretten die ik van stuiterende kinderen op de trappen van het Academiegebouw mocht maken.

Ook wel lekker hoor, ter afwisseling van de ‘slow photography’ die ik doorgaans in mijn studio en grafisch atelier maak.

Just like the sheep above. That's how eagerly I'm craning my neck toward the summer holidays these days. Not that I'm bored — far from it. But these tropical temperatures lately will naturally put you in a holiday mood regardless.

“Oh sure,” I hear you thinking, “yours truly went and took an AI course for photographers.” Fair point — I did write about that just last month. But no: no AI was involved here, nor any form of post-processing. A fast camera, a trip to Terschelling, and a second sheep with a good sense of timing and space was all I needed.

My own sense of timing and space got a bit of a sharpening this month too. During the Feanster 40, for instance, the triathlon that comes thundering past my front door every year. Or while taking portraits of bouncing kids on the steps of the Academy Building.

Nice for a change too, after the 'slow photography' I usually make, back in my photo studio and behind my etching press.

Time is hope

Tijd is hoop.

Zo heet het dikke boek dat ik voor de vakantie vast klaar heb liggen, van Joke J. Hermsen. Vol met filosofische essays over de beleving van tijd. Ook haar boek Stil de tijd is erin opgenomen, wat me eerder erg geïnspireerd heeft en de serie The edge of time opleverde.

Afgelopen maand stond er trouwens ook een groot stuk in de Volkskrant, over hoe veranderlijk subjectieve tijd is. Zo is het niet alleen onderhevig aan hoe warm of koud het is, maar wordt het vooral bepaald door wat we doen en meemaken.

Als we allerlei leuke nieuwe dingen doen, zoals op vakantie, lijkt de tijd veel sneller te gaan. Maar terug thuis voelt het alsof we heel lang weg zijn geweest. Zo voelden die drie dagen Terschelling toch als een hele week. Lekker hoor. Werd er ook erg productief van, met twee nieuwe series.

Time Is Hope.

That's the title of the hefty book I've got lined up for the holidays, by Joke J. Hermsen. Full of philosophical essays on the experience of time. It also includes her book Stil de tijd ('Quiet the Time'), which inspired me greatly a while back and led to the series The edge of time.

There was also a substantial piece in de Volkskrant last month, by the way, about just how changeable subjective time really is. It turns out time isn't only affected by how hot or cold it is, but determined above all by what we do and experience.

When we're doing all sorts of fun, new things — like on holiday — time seems to fly by much faster. But once we're back home, it feels like we've been away for ages. Those three days on Terschelling certainly felt like a whole week. Lovely, really. Made me rather productive too, with two new series to show for it.

One last thing…

Hoe ik die twee series gemaakt heb?

De eerste, getiteld The shape of time, heb ik met behulp van papier, licht, en water gemaakt. Wederom geen AI. Voor de tweede serie, Twist & shout, heb ik daar wel gebruik van gemaakt. Heel bewust en met mijn eigen foto’s als basis. Een persoonlijke, eigentijdse herinterpretatie van mijn eerdere serie Twisting moment. 

Toch evengoed geinig om te ontdekken dat AI de plank nog totaal misslaat als je hem vraagt wat geestigs of ontroerends te bedenken voor What were you thinking? Geeft toch een beetje hoop voor de mensheid, niet?

Pandora’s box gaat niet meer dicht, hoe graag we dit misschien ook willen, gezien de negatieve kant van AI die steeds zichtbaarder en tastbaarder begint te worden. Maar ik denk dat er ook zeker een positieve kant is (zie How to stay hungry).

Zoals Steve Jobs ooit zei: “Blijf hongerig, blijf dwaas!”

How did I make those two series?

The first, titled The shape of time, I made using paper, light, and water. Again, no AI involved. For the second series, Twist & shout, I did use it.  Quite deliberately, and based on my own photographs. A personal, contemporary reinterpretation of my earlier series Twisting moment.

Still rather amusing to discover that AI completely misses the mark when you ask it to come up with something witty or moving for What were you thinking? Gives you a bit of hope for humanity, doesn't it?

Pandora's box won't close again, however much we might wish it would, given the downsides of AI that are becoming increasingly visible and tangible. But I do think there's a positive side too (see How to stay hungry).
