En? Al overgeschakeld naar vakantiemodus? 

Het kost misschien even wat tijd, maar als je niet meteen weet wat voor dag het vandaag is of hoe laat het is, dan ben je goed bezig, denk ik zo. Een heerlijk gevoel, vind ik altijd. En een goed moment om weer eens een goed boek in te duiken. En het daadwerkelijk uit te lezen.

Het lukt mij al aardig. Zo las ik Noem het geen kunst van Austin Kleon met veel plezier en in no time uit (over het belang van veel te experimenteren), vloog ik door de uiterst intrigerende graphic novel Here van Richard McGuire (laat op een innovatieve manier uiteenlopende momenten op dezelfde plek zien), en ben ik halverwege Art work: On the Creative Life van Sally Mann (over geluk, afwijzing, en vooral over hard werken als enige betrouwbare methode om kunst te maken), en Dan Browns Het ultieme geheim (over menselijk bewustzijn). Voor wat zwaardere kost ligt Tijd is hoop van Joke J. Hermsen op me te wachten.

Welk boek gaat in jouw koffer mee op vakantie?

So? Switched over to holiday mode yet?

It might take a little while, but if you don't immediately know what day it is or what time it is, then you're doing something right, I'd say. A wonderful feeling, if you ask me. And a good moment to dive into a good book again. And actually finish it.

I'm already doing quite well on that front. I breezed through Austin Kleon's Don’t call it art in no time (about the importance of experimenting a lot), flew through the utterly intriguing graphic novel Here by Richard McGuire (which demonstrates an innovative way of showing wildly different moments in the same place), and I'm halfway through both Sally Mann's Art work: On the Creative Life (on happiness, rejection, and above all hard work as the only reliable method for making art), and Dan Brown's The Secret of Secrets (on human consciousness). For something heavier, Joke J. Hermsen's Time Is Hope is waiting for me.

It’s about time

Tijd heeft me altijd bezig gehouden, op wetenschappelijk, fotografisch, en persoonlijk vlak. Bijna dertig jaar lang deed ik onderzoek naar de tijdsdynamiek van selectieve aandacht. De combinatie van een full-time baan als onderzoeker/universitair docent met een part-time baan als fotograaf leverde me wel een behoorlijke spagaat qua tijd op. Daarentegen bracht het ook inspiratie voor diverse fotografieprojecten.

In The Singularity Project lukte het me bijvoorbeeld om op drie verschillende plekken tegelijk te zijn. De worsteling met tijd leidde o.a. tot Avec le temps en Perpetuum Mobile. En de serie Notes on time and existence leverde me een publicatie in Pf Fotografie Magazine op.

Nu ik volledig op de fotografie kan focussen, zou je denken dat tijd wat minder een issue is, maar niets is minder waar. De dagen zijn nog steeds te kort om alle plannen en ideeën die ik heb te realiseren. Maar ik vind het wel nog steeds leuk om het concept tijd met een wetenschappelijke en/of filosofische blik te blijven benaderen, zoals in The edge of time en The shape of time.

Momenteel werk ik aan een nieuw project over tijd, met als werktitel De toekomst ligt achter je. Een titel die op het eerste gezicht misschien tegenstrijdig klinkt, maar dat bij nader inzien allerminst is. Het concept heb ik inmiddels aardig uitgewerkt, nu alleen de beelden nog. To be continued!

Time has always occupied me — scientifically, photographically, and personally. For nearly thirty years I investigated the temporal dynamics of selective attention. Combining a full-time job as a researcher/university lecturer with a part-time job as a photographer created quite the balancing act when it came to time. On the other hand, it also provided inspiration for various photography projects.

In The Singularity Project, for instance, I managed to be in three different places at once. The struggle with time also led to Avec le temps and Perpetuum Mobile. And the series Notes on time and existence earned me a publication in Pf Fotografie Magazine.

Now that I can focus entirely on photography, you'd think time would be less of an issue, but nothing could be further from the truth. The days are still too short to realize all the plans and ideas I have. But I still enjoy approaching the concept of time with a scientific and/or philosophical lens, as in The edge of time and The shape of time.

I'm currently working on a new project about time, with the working title The future lies behind you. A title that may sound contradictory at first glance, but is anything but, on closer inspection. I've worked out the concept fairly well by now; just the images left to go. To be continued!
