Kritiek. Niemand is er dol op om die te ontvangen, hoe constructief het ook allemaal is bedoeld. Verschrikkelijk vond ik de peer reviews van mijn wetenschappelijke artikelen. Het is altijd moeilijk om het niet persoonlijk op te vatten, vooral als je er je ziel en je zaligheid in hebt gestopt. Maar uiteindelijk groei je er wel van en wordt het werk er zelf ook meestal beter van. 

Hetzelfde geldt voor mijn fotografie. Zo had ik gehoopt mijn nieuwe serie De toekomst ligt achter je inmiddels klaar te hebben. Over de aanpak en uitvoering ben ik al wel tevreden, maar de beelden wil ik toch meer inhoud geven dan ze nu hebben, nadat ik daar wat terechte vragen over kreeg.

Het is leuker en makkelijker om louter lof te ontvangen. Maar ook om het te geven. Evengoed is het wellicht toch ook goed om af en toe wat kritischer te (durven) zijn, bijvoorbeeld over de exposities die ik bezoek.

Deze keer dus drie kritische stukjes om mee te openen. Over een expositie die ik graag zelf had willen inrichten. Een tweede over de nieuwe artistieke weg die het Groninger Museum is ingeslagen.  En één over het werk van Ed van der Elsken. Wereldberoemd en alom geprezen, maar toen ik zag hoe hij op straat te werk ging kreeg ik er toch een wat ongemakkelijk gevoel van.

Criticism. No one loves receiving it, however constructive it's all meant to be. I found the peer reviews of my scientific papers terrible. It's always hard not to take it personally, especially when you've poured your heart and soul into something. But in the end you grow from it, and the work itself usually gets better too.

The same goes for my photography. I'd hoped to have my new series, The Future Lies Behind You, finished by now. I'm already satisfied with the approach and execution, but I want to give the images more substance than they currently have, after receiving some fair questions about them.

It's more enjoyable and easier to purely receive praise. But also to give it. Still, it may be worth (daring to) be a bit more critical every now and then — about exhibitions I visit, for instance.

So this time, three critical pieces to open with. One about an exhibition I would have loved to curate myself. A second about the new artistic path the Groninger Museum has taken. And one about the work of Ed van der Elsken. World-famous and widely praised, but when I saw how he worked on the street, it left me with a somewhat uneasy feeling. 

Inspirerend was het allemaal wel hoor. Zelf vind ik het ook heerlijk om op straat voorbijgangers te fotograferen. En ja, dat voelt altijd wat ongemakkelijk.

Maar waar Ed van der Elsken of bijvoorbeeld iemand als Bruce Gilden een expliciete reactie van het lijdend voorwerp uitlokt, vermijd ik die interactie voor zo ver mogelijk. Soms is interactie nodig om iemand op zijn gemak te stellen, maar door die interactie verandert ook het beeld dat ik juist wil vangen. Zowel in veel van mijn vrije werk als in mijn werk in opdracht zie je dat denk ik terug.

It was all inspiring, though. I myself also love photographing passersby on the street. And yes, that always feels a bit uncomfortable.

But where Ed van der Elsken, or someone like Bruce Gilden, provokes an explicit reaction from their subject, I avoid that interaction as much as possible. Sometimes interaction is needed to put someone at ease, but that interaction also changes the image I actually want to capture. I think you see that reflected in much of both my free work and my commissioned work.

Nostalgic stuff

Als ik naar het wereldnieuws kijk dan bekruipt me regelmatig het gevoel dat de beschaving achteruit in plaats van vooruit holt. We gaan er vaak blind vanuit dat nieuwe producten, ontwikkelingen en trends verbeteringen bieden op wat er al is. Dat doe ik ook (denk aan camera’s, bordspellen, etc.), maar het is goed om te realiseren dat retro stuff, oude ambachten, en good-old-fashioned handwerk een hoop ervaring en kwaliteit in zich mee droegen.

When I look at world news, I'm often struck by the feeling that civilization is racing backward rather than forward. We often blindly assume that new products, developments, and trends offer improvements on what already exists. I do that too (think of cameras, board games, etc.), but it's good to realize that retro stuff, old crafts, and good-old-fashioned handiwork carried a lot of experience and quality with them.

One last thing…

We sluiten positief af met een een laatste culturele tip. Een fantastisch museum waar je beslist (een keer of meerdere keren) naar toe moet.
