The edge of time

Each moment carries the whole flow of the past, and each moment is new and unrepeatable, like a rolling snowball or piece of music.
Often I can literally feel time pricking my back. Standing still is not an option. It pushes me forward, forces me to change, and gives me a tremendous urge to create. Until I fall over the edge.
However, there is not only a back but also a front to time. The German philosopher Ernst Simon Bloch (1885-1977), for instance, did not see time as merely the steady approach of death, but also the approach of ever new beginnings. After all, time offers the space to change, improve and above all reinterpret what already exists. The desire to realise what 'does not yet exist' is, according to Bloch, the essential characteristic of all living things. It pushes man forward to break the existing, the status quo, again and again. A comforting as well as hopeful thought.
De rand van de tijd
Als er één gemeenschappelijk ding is in het universum, dan is het wel tijd, volgens Henri-Louis Bergson (1859-1941), een Franse filosoof. Elk ogenblik draagt de hele stroom van het verleden in zich en elk moment is nieuw en onherhaalbaar, als een rollende sneeuwbal of muziekstuk.
Vaak voel ik die tijd letterlijk in mijn rug prikken. Stilstaan is geen optie. Ze duwt me voort, dwingt me tot verandering, en geeft me een enorme drang om te creëren. Tot ik over de rand val.
Er zit echter niet alleen een achterkant maar ook een voorkant aan de tijd. Zo beschouwde de Duitse filosoof Ernst Simon Bloch (1885-1977) tijd niet louter als een gestaag dichterbij komen van de dood, maar eveneens het naderen van steeds weer een nieuw begin. De tijd biedt immers de ruimte om tot verandering, verbetering en vooral herinterpretatie van het reeds bestaande te komen. Het verlangen om te realiseren van wat er ‘nog niet is’, is volgens Bloch het essentiële kenmerk van al het levende. Het duwt de mens voort om het bestaande, de status-quo, telkens opnieuw te doorbreken. Een troostrijke èn hoopvolle gedachte.
