FotoFestival Naarden

Fotofestival Naarden has existed since 1989, making it the oldest photography festival in the Netherlands. Last Wednesday I had a wonderful day in Naarden Vesting, visiting the festival together with Amber Beckers. Wouter le Duc stood out with his beautiful portraits. Martin Roemers impressed with his photos of Americans living in their cars or RVs. Vivian Keulards presented a powerful series of women in the navy - and what they looked like nine years ago. Moving and unsettling at the same time. The same goes for the work of Sandra Minten. She created portraits of migrant youth who are trying to learn the Dutch language. I thought the title of her series alone was brilliant: 'Silence is the only foreign language I speak fluently'.
But the most original work, in my opinion, was by Lara van der Beek, featured in the satellite exhibition Festival-OFF. The way she transforms her images into sculptures was truly surprising. I don’t have any photos of them, but her work is absolutely worth checking out on her own website. Or right now at Galerie Pouleuff. The entire festival can be visited until July 6, 2025.
Fotofestival Naarden bestaat sinds 1989 en is daarmee het oudste fotografiefestival van Nederland. Afgelopen woensdag een heerlijke dag in Naarden Vesting gehad, om samen met Amber Beckers het festival te bezoeken. Wouter le Duc sprong er uit met prachtige portretten. Martin Roemers maakte indruk met zijn foto’s van Amerikanen die in hun auto of camper wonen. Vivian Keulards had een krachtige serie van vrouwen bij de marine - en hoe ze er 9 jaar geleden nog uitzagen. Ontroerend en verontrustend tegelijk. Zo ook het werk van Sandra Minten. Zij maakte portretten van migrantenjongeren die de Nederlandse taal proberen te leren. Alleen al de titel van de serie vond ik fantastisch: ‘Alleen de stilte spreek ik vloeiend’.
Maar het meest origineel vond ik het werk van Lara van der Beek dat onderdeel uitmaakte van de satelliettentoonstelling Festival-OFF. Hoe zij van haar beelden sculpturen maakt vond ik heel verrassend. Heb ik geen foto’s van, maar die zijn zeker het bekijken waard op haar eigen website. Of momenteel dus in Galerie Pouleuff. Het gehele festival is te bezoeken t/m 6 juli 2025.
